Dear Member,

URGENT HELP NEEDED!!

During the past three years in the South Nottinghamshire Division we have been working with you, our partner agencies and private businesses to vigorously reduce the incidents of peoples homes being broken into (Dwelling Burglary).

There has been a vast array of initiatives such as the “Lock it campaign” and others which have helped to raise awareness to the problem, making it harder for the thieves to break in and to ensure that those we catch are sent to prison. We also try to influence drug users to change their life style to reduce their offending.

The result is that since 31 st March 2004 we have reduced burglary of houses by 42% in the Broxtowe area, 35% in the Gedling area and 30% in Rushcliffe area.

These reductions are significant and we want to continue to reduce burglary even further.

In South Nottinghamshire there are 144,000 homes and we want to reduce the number of homes broken into, to below six crimes per day.

To enable this to happen we need to make it even harder for criminals to get into your homes. I would like to enlist your help in this quest.

Two out of three homes do not have a burglar alarm fitted. One in four burglaries are as a result of a window or door being left open.

There are three things I would like to ask of you:-

•  Please consider having a burglar alarm fitted – we will be circulating details in the next few weeks about how cost effective this is and there are opportunities to exploit special packages we have negotiated with local companies, which will be circulated via the NHW system.
•  Please look out for insecure windows and doors. Tell your friends and neighbours about it and raise their awareness to keeping themselves and their homes safe.

•  Please extend this message beyond the Neighbourhood Watch circles. Send a copy to everyone on your email address list. Tell as many people as possible.

We will continue to work with our partners to reduce burglary but we need your help and support as well.

Thank you for helping to make South Nottinghamshire a safer place to live.

Yours sincerely,

P D Moyes
